SMOKE IN EXHAUST

WHITE SMOKE IN EXHAUST
White and/or bluish smoke generally is indicative of oil getting into the cylinders such as:
  • Worn rings
  • worn valve stem and/or guides
  • high oil pressure
  • wrong oil viscosity--usually thinner then recomeneded
  • to much oil in the engine
  • late engine timing
  • low compression
SOME BLACK OR GRAY SMOKE IN EXHAUST
This color smoke is more indicative of a fuel problem such as:
  • injector pump problems
  • injector problems
  • poor compression
  • injection timing

It can also indicate high back pressure in your exhaust system. Possibly from rust or other material clogging the exhaust pipe, or rust and/or silt/sediment clogging the water lift muffler.

Not enough air getting to the engine can also cause this color smoke. Make sure you have clean air filters and also that the compartment the engine is in, isn't so tight as to restrict air flow.
LARGE AMOUNT OF VERY BLACK SMOKE IN EXHAUST
This would generally indicate the same problems as listed above, but only worse.

It can also indicate an overloaded engine, so make sure you have the proper propeller, and that it is not fouled. Adding auxillary equipment can also contribute to engine overload.
